The 1959 Stock Page
Bakerloo, Piccadilly & Northern lines
The 1959 stock was a replacement for the old standard stock which was by then almost life expired. A new stock was required for the Piccadilly line so units of 1959 stock where ordered. During delivery some units were transferred to the Central line as units of 1962 stock were on order. after a few years of service on the Piccadilly line New 1973 stock units where ordered for the Heathrow extension. So the 1959 stock was again transferred to the Northern Line and later some to the Bakerloo line.
The 1959 stock was never allocated to the Jubilee Line. However, a one-off special operation occurred on Sunday 27 October 1985. On this date, all LUL tracks were closed between Wembley Park and Willesden Green, in connection with engineering work. To provide a Jubilee Line service between Willesden Green and Charing Cross, 1959 stock from the Bakerloo Line was used, provided by London Road depot. Notice that trains displayed 'Stanmore' as a northbound destination - passengers were required to change onto a replacement bus service at Willesden Green to Wembley Park, from where a service to Stanmore was provided using the Jubilee Line's usual rolling stock.
